Biannual information on euro banknote counterfeiting (Date posted: 2009-02-01)
Frankfurt, 2009-01-12 (European Central Bank) 
In the second half of 2008 a total of 354,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation. This is an increase of around 13% on the quantity recovered in the previous six months. The following table, which indicates the half-yearly trend in the number of counterfeits recovered, shows that there has recently been a gradual increase in the number of counterfeits.

Euro coin counterfeiting in 2008 (Date posted: 2009-01-13)

The total number of counterfeit euro coins removed from circulation in 2008 was 195.900, down from 211.100 the year before. While this development confirms the success of the action to render euro coins safer for the users, Member States should maintain and intensify efforts to remove counterfeits from circulation.

In the first half of 2008 a total of 312,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation. Although this is an increase of 5.4% on the quantity recovered in the previous six months, the following table, which indicates the half-yearly trend in the number of counterfeits recovered, shows that the quantity has not varied greatly over recent years. It should be noted that since the second half of 2007 there has been an increase of 5.7% in the number of genuine banknotes in circulation.
